Chain story

How to lubricate the drive chain

O-ring chain
ALWAYS clean & lubricate the drive chain before each ride.
If you do so, you'll avoid costs and guarantee a longer life span!
Don't just grease it in. Always clean first, then grease in your drive chain!
Also, IF your drive chain is worn out, replace the 2 sprockets too. Why? Well, because riding a new drive chain with old sprockets will just wear out the new drive chain to the condition the old drive chain was in, in a matter of days.
There are 2 types of drive chains; Regular drive chains & O-ring drive chains.
Most ATV's have O-ring drive chains.
If you are not sure whether your ATV has a regular or o-ring type of drive chain, check out "What's an O-ring drive chain?".

Regular drive chain
Cleaning regular drive chain:
Before greasing in, clean your drive chain.  By cleaning your drive chain before greasing it in you'll avoid wearing it out rapidly. You can use gasoline, petrol or filter oil together with a regular brush. (steel brush is also ok to use onto regular chain) Rub off the dirt and worn out grease and wipe it dry with a cloth. Or you can use an air gun to blow your drive chain dry.
IMPORTANT: This does NOT apply for O-ring drive chains!
Lubricate regular drive chain:
Afterwards, grease in the drive chain. Grease in the side of the drive chain that comes in contact with the sprockets.
2 methods to grease in drive chain:
1. unpractical: push ATV ahead whilest greasing in the drive chain.
2. practical: turn you wheels in air whilest greasing in the drive chain: you can either use a lift or you can tilt your ATV onto a box, or anything strong you have laying around to rest the swing arm onto.

O-ring drive chain
What's an O-ring drive chain?
An O-ring drive chain is more durable drive chain and is therefore a bit more expensive. Most ATV come with an O-ring drive chain. Look for the O-rings on you ATV's drive chain. (*) Inside an O-ring drive chain there are small rubber O-rings filled with grease. The grease inside the O-rings avoids dust and water from entering. This is what sets the chain apart from a regular chain and is why this chain needs another method of cleaning as well as another type of grease, compared to a regular chain.

Cleaning O-ring drive chain:
Before greasing it in, clean it with a regular brush.
a. Wipe the drive chain with a clean cloth.
b. Put the drive chain in kerosene and remove any remaining dirt with a not-coarse brush. (*)
c. Remove the drive chain from the kerosene and completely dry it.

clean drive chain
(*)(remove dirt with not-coarse brush & kerosene)
Never use high-pressure water or air, steam, gasoline, certain solvents (e.g., benzene), or a coarse brush to clean the drive chain. High-pressure methods could force dirt or water into the drive chain’s internal parts, and solvents will deteriorate the O-rings. A coarse brush can also damage the O-rings. Therefore, use only kerosene to clean the drive chain.
  • Don’t soak the drive chain in kerosene for more than ten minutes to prevent damaging the O-rings.
After cleaning it, spray on some WD40 to protect the chain from rust.
Lubricate O-ring drive chain:
The most important components that need lubrication are the O-rings them self. Greasing those is more important then greasing in the joints.
WARNING:
DO NOT use regular drive chain grease! It will wear out the o-ring drive chain and cause it to break. To avoid damage you need to get a lubricate that is specially designed for O-ring drive chains.

IMPORTANT REMARKS!

Drive chain with lock:
If you have a drive chain with a lock on it, make sure you lock it towards the turn direction. I.e. the side where to lock is open has to point towards the back. This way you're avoiding the lock to come of while riding. Also, if you unlock your drive chain for maintenance, use the lock only one more time. Next time get a new lock.
Drive chain maintenance:
- When? After each ride!
- Clean, before greasing in!
Lubricate: Not too much. Not too little. Use a special lubricant for O-ring drive chain.
Drive chain replacement:
- If your chain is worn out, replace all components all together at once!
(front sprocket, rear sprocket & drive chain)
If you notice your drive chain needs replacing, or you notice a sprocket needs replacing, you are wise to replace both drive chain and sprockets all together at once! (front sprocket, rear sprocket & drive chain) Otherwise, if you replace just one component, the new component will wear out as quickly as the worn out components. There is no point in buying a new drive chain if you plan to use it together with the old worn out sprockets!
Hence the importance of cleaning & lubricating your drive chain before or after each ride!
Drive chain tension:
- Not too hard. Not too loose. Make sure you allow your drive chain to have a slack of 25-33 mm.
To check the drive chain slack, all tires must be touching the ground and there should be no weight on it. Check the drive chain slack at the position shown in the illustration. (a) Normal slack is approximately 25-35 mm.

How to clean Your ATV by ATV India PowerSport , Service and Maintenance How to Clean your atv and Keep It in top condiction

How to clean the ATV
Making a clean atv out of a muddy one is really important..
. Because if you clean your atv properly you're expanding its lifespan.

A properly Cleaned ATV takes 6 steps.
1.     Close off holes
2.     Cool off
3.     Wash off dirt
4.     Soap in
5.     Dry off
6.     Plastic care
1. Close off holes
Before hosing off the ATV, close off the exhaust and air box. Either close off the exhaust with some ducktape or put a cloth into the back of the exhaust. Or use a silencer plug (Pro Grip Silencer Plug or MSR Racing Silencer Plug) and never hassle with cloths or tape again. This to prevent water from filtering through to the cilinder. Next, close of you air box as well, again using a large cloth to prevent water from filtering through to the carburator.
2. Cool off
BEFORE hosing off the bike, make sure your engine is cooled off. DO NOT & NEVER cool off your engine by spraying water on it! Because, if you do so, you're increasing the chance you'll pull your engine. Don't force metal to contract faster then it naturally does when it naturally cools off. The same counts next time you want to take your ATV for a ride. Don't take off immediately after you've started the engine. Give it some time to warm up first... Grant the metal some slack.
If you want to extend the life of your ATV, these are the most crucial points.
Just give your engine the time to cool off & warm up!
Wash off dirt
Clean ATVTo best way to hose off the ATV is by making use of a high-pressure cleaner, preferably connected to a warm water tap. Make sure, if you buy a high-pressure cleaner, it has a minimal pressure of 60BAR. More pressure isn't actually necessary, since the chance you'll find yourself hosing off decals and graphics increases. If you do have more pressure then 60BAR, cleaning will go faster, but watch out for your decals and exposed holes (see step 1). Of course you can also finish the job using a simple garden hose or bucket filled with water and soap. No problem!
TIP: After you've hosed off your ATV, put it on its grabber and have another go. You'll be amazed how much dirt you missed spraying off.
WARNING: Close your fuel tap before tilting your ATV!
Some people, additionally, blow out dirt out off little holes, switches and other components using an air compressor.
4. Soap in
There are 2 ways you can soap in your ATV.
- using a high compression cleaner that has a function to soap in,
- or using a plant-spray (90% water/10% soap) which is time consuming but affective.
Either way, let the soap set for 5 minutes before you wash off.
TIP: Afterwards, start your engine and let it run for a minute or 2 to ensure your engine will definitely start up next time you take it out.
5. Dry off
As an extra you can dry your ATV using a clean cloth.
WARNING: If you prefer to dry it off by taking it for a drive, make sure you test your brakes first, because your brake discs can still be wet!
6. Plastic care
When your ATV is dry and dust free, you can use 'silicon spray' or 'glitter spray' to give your plastics a new look shine. Silicon spray also applies a layer that prevents dirt sticking on tight; i.e. next time you'll wash off your ATV, dirt will come of as easy as never before. Silicon spray also protects against scratches and will make your plastics shine again.
Just spray in your plastics with it, and slightly rub it in with a clean soft cloth. (make sure your plastics are dry and dust free)
Don't exaggerate while spraying though. With a soft cloth your can easily spread it out evenly.
WARNINGS:
1.     Never use simonies products! Plastics come standard with a shiny layer. If you use simonies , they will most defenatly scour this layer off.
2.     Don't use WD40 either, because this will make it easier for dust to stick on. It will also give your plastics a flat look.
3.     Prevent spraying in your grips or they'll loose their function ...providing grip.
4.     If you have an o-ring chain, try to avoid washing it of with your high compression cleaner.

ATV tyre Pressure, why so important?? Article by Atv India Powersport

How to check air pressure

How to check the ATV tire pressure
By regularly checking the pressure in your atv tires, you're assuring the atv will always drive & brake in a straight line. Check the atv tire pressure regularly!
Use a tire-pressure gauge. You can also use the pressurized-air machines at many gas stations and garages, although they might not always be accurate or functioning.
STEP 1:
You can't tell whether a tire has the correct air pressure just by looking at it. Always use a tire-pressure gauge.
STEP 2:
Look for the air-pressure specifications for your atv's tires on your atv warning labels or in the owners manual. Don't look at the tire's sidewall for the air-pressure specifications, as it lists the maximum pressure for the tire.

TIP: Make sure the rear tires always have 50grams more pressure then the front tires.

STEP 3:
Unscrew the plastic cap on the air valve. Put it in your pocket so you don't lose it.
STEP 4: Press the tire-pressure gauge against the valve and hold it down firmly. If you hear a hissing noise, you are letting air out. Press down harder.
STEP 5:
Read the measurement on the gauge.
STEP 6:
Add air as needed, but don't overfill the tire. Let some air out of the tires if you accidentally overfill them. Press down on the small needle in the center of the valve to let air out. Most tire-pressure gauges have a small knob for this purpose, but a fingernail or a pen will do the trick.
